Running a Business While Dealing with Medical Complexities
We've had people ask, “How do you juggle a small business and your family's complex medical issues?” Honestly, it's a hard question to answer. But...we're gonna try.
There are times when we have to put the business on a "sort of" pause because of difficult medical circumstances. It's quite common, that when Hannah gets admitted to the hospital for whatever she's dealing with at the time; that we let the business go into a temporary hibernation.
Let us explain - if Hannah isn't too bad, then sometimes, Lori will still fill orders and even go to markets. But, if Hannah is not doing well, more often than not, Lori will stay in the hospital with her. Even then, Lori is still responding and communicating with anyone who has contacted us, taking orders to be filled when our lives return to a more normal. Though it's been a while since this has happened, when it does, life becomes rather monopolized by the hospital. Business just has to be put on the back burner until Hannah is well enough for us to fully focus on it again.
And truth - we usually end up connecting with fellow patients and hospital staff that leads to new friends and customers.
All that being said, this is actually the reason we chose to start our own small business. The flexibility to be able to work the business around our life, is exactly what we wanted and needed. It allows our family to prioritize the things that are most important to us. We can be active in our church, spend time as a family, serve our community, visit distant relatives, and yes, deal with medical complexities.
We firmly believe that God ordered our steps to starting exactly the right kind of business for our family's unique circumstances. And we are so very grateful to Him for it.
